Cheeseweed (Malva parviflora) is often found in open fields,
vacant lots, or in backyards.
Native of Eurasia, it is a common weed that is found almost everywhere
in lower elevations.

Young painted lady caterpillars may be found in the center
of a cheeseweed leaf protected by silk webbing.

Larger painted lady caterpillars are often located inside
a leaf folded together with silk into a cup shape --
a hibernaculum (a shelter from predators).
