MOURNING CLOAK (Nymphalis antiopa) Flight Period: Multiple brooded in warm climates, however they overwinter as adults throughout most of the U.S. from November to April. They seek shelter under tree bark or in rock crevasses. They may be seen flying on sunny winter days. Range: North America south to Venezuela and throughout Eurasia. Common Host Plants: Willow (Salix spp.), cottonwood (Populus spp.), and elm (Ulmus spp.). Wing Span: 2 7/8 - 3 3/8" (73 - 86 mm). |
