GIANT SWALLOWTAIL (Papilio cresphontes)

Flight Period: Several broods from March through November.  It is a recent invader of citrus groves in California and is sometimes called the "Orange Dog" by citrus growers.  Males do not show hill topping behavior.  They patrol to seek females in sunny open areas.  Adults sip flower nectar, mud, and fresh manure.  It is capable of flying long distances.

Range: Two broods reaching as far as the northeast and multiple brooded in the southwest, along the Gulf states, south to Colombia, and Cuba.

Host Plants: Rutaceae (citrus, including common rue, Ruta graveolens).

Wing Span: 3 3/8 - 5 1/2" (86 - 140 mm).
